Polearm Samurai, Gimp or Buff?

Yep, enough outparsing a lot of people :< This will end today ; ;
Penta Thrust Thought
Adjustment to Penta Thrust:
– Penta Thrust
Damage varies with TP >> Accuracy varies with TP
Under normal weapon skill calculation, if TP doesn’t affect accuracy, you pretty much take your melee accuracy into consideration, so old method was… if I was meleeing with 75% acc, your Penta’s accuracy for all 5 hits would be around that percentage.
This update’s adjustment is putting it sort of like “Sidewinder”, with “Accuracy varies with TP”, its attack modifier must be increased in order to compensate the lost in accuracy.
What does it mean then? If attack is modified, that means at 100% TP, our weapon skill “should” be stronger than before. This kills the “Martial Polearm” instantly… unless you are having mad accuracy problem.
Possibility: If attack modifier “was not” adjusted to compensate the tradeoff, then this update is a “gimp” to polearm users T.T
On the other hand… SE added a new job trait “Accuracy Bonus” for Dragoon, so they might have adjusted so that 100% TP before is more accurate than 100TP new update, WITHOUT the trait, so they had to add it in to compensate it.
Skewer Thought
– Skewer
Accuracy varies with TP >> Chance of critical hit varies with TP
Although Mai Samurai can’t use Skewer (Dragoon exclusive), but from the look and with the “Accuracy Bonus” job trait, the weapon skill should now be more accurate, so therefore, the adjustment to Skewer is obviously a buff to increase Dragoon’s overall power.
How does it affect Samurai Polearm user like me?
It really depends afterall, if the attack modifier was adjusted since they made the TP modifier as accuracy. I don’t have accuracy problem at all, and was able to achieve 82% on Colibri without a bard song. (its not great, but 82% without a bard is pretty good).
We don’t get the Dragoon Accuracy trait so… (they have it, so they can stack str gear respectively, or atk where applicable)
If the attack modifier isn’t adjusted then Samurai who uses Polearm is going to experience some trouble!
I still have all my parses and data, just need to party with a few others and see about the new changes. I’m a Samurai Polearm user! Still proud to be one ;) (Proud enough to have 8 merits on Polearm!)
After Patch!
Looks like accuracy of Penta Thrust was not gimped at all, the overall effect was amazing, people were doing 3k+ Penta Thrust now! (lol how Penta goes through 3 revisions).
Unconfirmed Facts:
- 2 STR used to be 1 attack, after patch its 1 attack per strength
This also applies to accuracy, which means 2 hand melee should be wearing DEX rings for TPing soon, since DEX also adds Crit chance. - Over a course of 100 swings, 2% DA means you only need to swin 98 times to achieve the effect of 100 swings, whereas 3% delay in weapon means when someone swings 100 times, you only need to swing 97 times.
Hagen for example is 450 delay + Hasso (10%) + Turban/Swift Belt (9%) / Typical Gear
450*.81=364.5, with a 3% delay calculated based on 450 weapon delay is 13.513.5/364.5 is aorund 3.7% more haste, equilvalent to weapons.
You would equip -3% weapon delay over DA. If this holds true.
- Penta Thrust’ Modifier was not gimped at all, if all holds true above, STR build for 2 handed weapon is a viable option, except probably be Skewer, where TP modifier is now Crit chance, and you kinda want to stack DEX too.
These are all facts I’ve read on forums, I’ll come back in a day and go find more!

But the double attack could on weaponskills
and the -3% delay is messing up people who have bare minimum store-tp for 6-hit setup because of the reduced tp gain due to lower delay
yea, was jus doing melee attack and dps in general, but you are right on that point :D, 1 DA kick in already outweight the -3% delay.
seems like axe grip the way to go too, 3 str 3 atk :D
If I were melee I don’t think I’d use Axe Grip…
Claymore Grip for crit+3%
Pole Strap for DA+2%
Spear Strap for DEX+3
Did I tell you that I had a thing for crits? lol…
Now I want a pixie earring even more badly!
Well, with the 1dex adjustment, we suddenly get a boost of crapload of acc and crit rate. A short party showed that my polearm samurai can easily cap 95% acc, so its kinda um…
I think those grip are all nice, needs a lot of stats to see which one works out in the end cuz…
Crit can crit melee dmg + ws
DA can DA on melee dmg + ws
Axe increases the base melee dmg + ws
DEX can do melee crit + ws
so yea… hard to choose, but preferences plays a big part atm until someone seriously did some parsing. I just happen to pick axe grips ;)
Personally, I would say DA grip > all in merit pt(parser wise) and for HNM related, Axe grip is better to maximize your ws dmg. If DA kicks in, it really boosts my dmg a lot in comparison to critical hits.
For shit and giggles, I bought Platinum grip(+2 acc and Additional effect: stun) where the stun effect procs better than I thought (around 5%ish) based on my observation. Not sure if the HQ version is better. I use Soboro with a platinum grip and I think it’s a good combo.
I don’t like the one with -3% weapon delay since it messes up my 6hit setup :(.
In addition, since the update, I haven’t eaten sushi in merit pt lol. Meat is the way to go.
Just my 2 cents.
